Stormwater refers to rain, ice and snow melt that does not infiltrate or evaporate. This excess water is exposed to pollution that may be present on the ground. Surface water runoff may dissolve or pick up these pollutants.
Harmful pollutants are particularly likely when rain falls on industrial facilities. However, impermeable surfaces such as roads, roofs and pavements make any built environment a potential source of pollution.
There are many kinds of pollution that can be found in stormwater including, waste, chemicals, oils, and particulate solids (TSS).
Stormwater treatment involves capturing pollutants from surface water runoff before they infiltrate into the ground or reach a watercourse or body of water, as once they have reached the natural environment they can cause harm to wildlife and can be extremely difficult to remove.
At ADS in the UK we have a range of stormwater treatment products that can be incorporated into a sustainable drainage system (SuDS).
