Stormwater Management Solutions

Stormwater management means using methods and systems to control and handle rainwater that flows off surfaces when it rains.

During heavy and extensive rainfall periods, saturated ground may stop absorbing water. This creates excess water that collects at the surface and may run into a nearby body of water or drainage system. This water can often contain debris, chemicals, and other harmful material that can lead to pollution.

Impermeable surfaces like roofs, roads, and pavements stop water from soaking naturally into the ground. This causes more water to build up on the surface. It then quickly flows into storm drains and other water systems, which can lead to flooding.

Stormwater management is the process of controlling stormwater and removing the pollutants. This may include using a combination of permeable / pervious surfaces, grey infrastructure, and green infrastructure to manage runoff. Together, these methods help to protect water quality, reduce flooding and mimic the natural water cycle.

• Pervious surfaces: Porous materials and open joints in pavement structures allows water to infiltrate into the ground. This reduces runoff and helps to promote natural groundwater recharge.
• Grey infrastructure: Systems include gutters, storm sewers and underground stormwater attenuation tanks. This also includes sediment traps (such as hydrodynamic separators) other manufactured water treatment devices (MTDs) and flow control regulators.
• Green infrastructure: These restore or mimic the natural water cycle. This includes green roofs, rain gardens, ponds, detention basins, swales, infiltration strips.
